I completed my summer training in Sun pharmaceuticals. Yes I’m an information technology student but the reason I preferred a pharmaceutical company over a core IT firm was that I had learnt quite a lot of programming languages and computers; it was time to now learn their application in other companies.
The company maintained an MIS(management information system) of which I was supposed to prepare documentations, go through existing problems, if any, and find a way to eliminate them effectively and efficiently. To be honest, it was quite a boring task as preparing documentations was not a time consuming and clumsy job and neither was detecting problems in it. So soon my boss ran out of work to assign me and that’s when the problem began of spending eight and half hours, straight, in front of a computer.
But no matter how boring and uneventful my training was, it was a pretty nice learning experience of my career building. It started on the interview itself. My project guide questioned me on everything I told him I had learnt up till then and though embarrassing I must confess I was terrible at all of them. But later I realised my university was not the type of temple of learning as one would expect it to be. The students were following the natural tendency of studying for marks but what was disappointing was that they were even getting away with it, including me. I think this approach can fetch marks but not success in life. To achieve what I desire I had to go beyond what was being taught to me. I had to stop wasting time downloading games and look for informative and constructive material and unlike popular games, it was easier to find and download too. I started form conquering my fear of complicated programs and decided to practice some programs of Java language. I made some simple and easier programs but my fear completely vanished and my first target was achieved. To make sure I modified them to a highly appreciable extent and I was quite pleased with myself. Next, I had to strengthen my strength. I had to become a master of all that I had learnt till now at school and college in program development like C++, SQL, Visual Basic and Java. I needed to be sincere and consistent to reach my second goal as it was the lengthiest one. My third goal was to continue this habit in college too, where I was most vulnerable to distractions and had a good chance of getting off the track.
But typing programs was not all I did due to lack of job in my office. I browsed the internet reading magazines and that’s when I came across my fourth target. I decided to be what I really wanted to be, I had to combine my strength and my passion which were programming and creative writing respectively. I now have a picture of the direction in which I should turn my life. I don’t know what I will do in my future work life but I know it’s going to be something prestigious and highly rewarding. I now know my recipe for success and I believe that is what the hard part is for most of us.
Studying for a degree and studying for attaining knowledge maybe two different things but alone neither can fill one’s tummy. The only difference between a car mechanic and an automobile engineer is that of a certified degree from a college and students need to live this fact.
